Dad’s soundtrack June 17th, 2010 by Kim

Recently while running, the old selection of tunes on my ipod got me thinking. (it’s old because I refused to wear headphones for a while because they all killed my ears…but I’m back in the game now with the pair that have yet to hurt and actually stay put even with movement. Anywayyy…) Each song that popped up transported me to a time or made different people pop into my mind. I was grinning with each new song & new person I was thinking of. It was just a really good strand of songs.  I know music is powerful like that and everyone probably experiences this, but several songs reminded me of my pops this trip and made me kind of sentimental.

Since Father’s Day is approaching, I wanted to write down some of the songs that make me think of my dear ol’ Dad.  Mainly because seeing several “dad songs” in one place is pretty amusing to me, and maybe only me. We’ll see.

-”Spilled Milk” or something like that by Pam Tillis. I can see my dad jamming out to it while working out in the backyard, mid-summer dark brown skin, about to take a crisp dive into the pool, maybe in light denim shorts. We felt so country listening to that one Pam Tillis cd, though we did later expand our country repertoire to Reba and a Leann Rimes single.
-”Karma Chameleon” by Culture Club: I can still picture the tape. It was always my selection when riding with Dad.
-”Come to my Window” by Melissa Etheridge: This one is actually because I remember making Dad turn off the tv so he could watch me air guitar and sing this song. I was not joking, and I believe I was in junior high.
-”Crazy” by Patsy Cline…okay maybe we were more into country than I realize
-”Gangsta’s Paradise” from Dangerous Minds as performed by Coolio…no denying Dad said he liked this little diddy back in 96. You might still find the soundtrack in the cd collection.
-”The Way You Look Tonight” Frank
-”Unchained Melody” /the Righteous Brothers in general, but this song popped on my ipod during the run & I couldn’t stop thinking about my dad. I love it.

There you have it. Though I could probably go on & on, here’s a small collection of songs from the John Bies soundtrack for me. Happy early Father’s Day!

Kim had never seen the classic Paul Simon music video with Chevy Chase so I introduced it to her last night. Brilliant.

The Buckets are going to Nationals! May 6th, 2010 by Nick

After just 7 years of existence the Texas State ultimate team is heading to nationals. For the last 3 seasons the Buckets have finished in the top 5 at south regionals but this year they took it all defeating Kansas in the finals. Congrats to the Buckets and best of luck in Wisconsin at nationals! Wish I could be there.

Here we are! April 20th, 2010 by Kim

Here we are in San Francisco! (this is actually the first time since arrival that I’ve felt the need to sing, Rice-a-Roni! A San Francisco treat!) One thing I must say: Muir Woods is amazing. A-mazing. It was truly the most peaceful place I’ve ever been. I really enjoyed just walking around, praying, thinking, observing and taking in as much as I could. Photos simply will not do it justice. I saw a humongo “banana slug”, which Nick explained is the 2nd largest slug in the world. Who knew?

Okay, so we’re actually in Sonoma now. Just a beautiful place so far! I feel so beyond spoiled just for being here and enjoying everything so much. This evening we got to know some neighbors at our b&b/hotel whatev over wine & cheese in the “parlor” & then ate dinner with them at the cutest restaurant –that we were able to walk to. The rainy drizzle didn’t even bother me a bit! It was kind of cozy, sitting inside the colorful and cutesy place watching the rain and chatting with Sandy and Al. Oh yeah, did I mention they’re celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary?

Annnd may I add that I was beyonnnd ready for dinner at about 5:30pm and as Nick reminded me, we had a really late lunch…Sometimes I have to laugh at us…maybe we’re old souls!

…Don’t worry: photo of the extraterrestrial slug to come.

Early morning ramblings April 11th, 2010 by Kim

So this morning I had to be at channel 2 at 5:45 AM…AM for an interview. Now I’m home & not really feeling like hitting the hay again. So I’m being a bit productive. It’s kind of nice now to have the extra time on a Sunday morning.

Driving while it was still dark out made me feel like I was driving to the airport super early for a trip. I don’t know if everyone feels that way, but my drives to the airport always seem to be before the sun rises. Must have been early-risers Pat & John’s choice back in the day. It just wouldn’t be vacation without excitement robbing me of any shot at sleep I may have had and then hitting the road while the rest of the world seemed to be mid-sleep.

I can’t remember what time our upcoming flight to San Fran is, but I’m sure we won’t disappoint. I have a feeling it’s early. I can’t believe the trip is almost here! Actually this morning as I was daydreaming about traveling, I panicked a little at not knowing all our flight info. I kind of want to read a book on Alcatraz or at least something set in San Francisco. I love learning the history of places. I’ve been warned not to make Alcatraz our last stop because we’d leave feeling way too somber. Actually, on an interesting note, Nick’s former roomie, Chris Rickner, has been in solitary confinement for a National Geographic experiment & reality show that airs tonight a 8 pm I believe. Pretty crazy. AlcatrazOkay, hopefully it won’t be another year before I post again! Oops!
